One of the people we interviewed currently is a mother of 2 children. She would like to have 1 more kid as she wants to have more children than normal people and she thinks that siblings can take care of one another in the future. She wants a big family because she thinks that there will be more family support.
Even though she wants a big family, she wants to stop at 3 children because she thinks that it is too expensive. She also already has 8 people living in the house so there is space constraint. She also stops at 3 children because she wants quality time with each of her children. We were also told that she doesn’t work every Friday so that she can spend the entire day with her kids.
When asked on her opinion on why Singaporeans are not giving birth, she said that it might be because of the fact that it is very competitive to study in Singapore and everyone wants their child to be the best. She also states that most Singaporeans are leading very comfortable lives without children. She also thinks that most women in Singapore work, thus they have no time for children.
When we asked her on how to increase the birth rate in Singapore, she said that the government should provide quality and cheap childcare centres and domestic helpers.
We asked her why Singapore needs to have more children and she told us that Singapore has not enough working force and that would make a huge impact on the economy. There would also be a huge burden on the future working population if this issue persists. She is worried about this as she fears that life would be very difficult for her children in the future because they would have more elderly people to take care of.
The other married person we interviewed currently has no children but wishes to have 3 in the future as he likes kids.
When we asked him why Singaporeans won’t give birth, he shared that people might find it stressful to have kids while working and may not be able to afford them as the cost of living in Singapore is high.
We asked him why the government is worried about this issue and he said that they are worried because there is not enough working population.
He said that he is worried about the future generation as they would be the ones suffering because of this issue.
Another person we interviewed, a grandmother who has 4 children of her own said that Singaporeans are not giving birth because there is too much pressure to give birth and not enough money for children.
When asked why the government is worried, she responded that there are too many immigrants, thus the government is worried.
The last married person we interviewed has 3 kids.
When we asked his opinion on why Singaporeans won't give birth, he said that it is because the pricing of housing in Singapore is too high and it is getting tougher to make a living and have a family in Singapore.

A single person we interviewed said that he wants to get married and have 2 children in the future. When we asked why he wanted children, he told us that he thinks children bring joy and laughter to his life.
We asked his opinion on why Singaporeans are not giving birth, he said that it might be because of the fact that working adults have no time for kids.
In conclusion. We think that most Singaporeans are not giving birth due to the high cost of living in Singapore. Most people want children, because they think children bring joy to their lives, but because of time constraint due to work, the high cost of living, the high cost of raising a child and the fact that Singapore is very competitive in terms of education, they do not have children.
Most Singaporeans are worried about the future generation if this problem persist as they think that it would affect them greatly as there would be a larger amount of elderly people to take care of to one working adult.
